Digital Connectivity - Bridging the gap between region and cities

Digital Connectivity is the Great Equalizer for regional and rural NSW and ACT.

One of our core strategic directives is to encourage increased economic and social development, which is underpinned by improved technology capabilities.

We believe that secure, stable internet and mobile services are the foundation for strong regional growth and liveability. Whether for home schooling, remote work, or emergency services, living in the bush with its vast and mountainous typography, poses numerous connectivity challenges. Recent bushfires, floods and Covid have highlighted how important reliable communications are.

Excitingly, our region is growing at a rapid rate, and one of the first questions potential commercial or residential relocators have is related to reliable internet, speed and mobile coverage.

The good news is that the Federal government is making considerable investments in digital infrastructure, and by collaborating with our stakeholders we intend to leverage relationships to be on the front foot to deliver the upgrades our region so desperately needs.

To this effect, we are working closely with telecommunication service providers, local councils, and consumers on several projects and initiatives to improve digital connectivity across our region, alonside the Regional Digital Connectivity Program, and the NSW Connectivity Strategy.

Regional Digital Connectivity program

The Regional Digital Connectivity program will ensure families and businesses across regional NSW have access to better mobile, internet and digital services.

The program will create connected, empowered and prosperous communities by leveraging technology and innovation.

NSW Connectivity Strategy

NSW Telco Authority has developed the NSW Connectivity Strategy to align and optimise state-wide programs and opportunities to ensure modern, high speed digital networks are available to all.

The strategy is an important step forward to align with world's best practice, accelerate access to digital services, and close the digital divide between metropolitan, rural, and regional areas.

3G Shutdown

The shutdown of 3G networks across the three main telecommunications providers is necessary as they move towards more advanced technologies like 4G and 5G. These newer networks are designed to support faster internet speeds, better call quality, and more devices at the same time. As technology advances, it’s natural for older systems to become outdated and be phased out to make room for improvements.

The shift from 3G to 4G and 5G is similar to upgrading from an old, slow computer to a newer, faster one; it allows everyone to enjoy a better, more efficient connectivity experience. Each telecommunications provider has committed to upgrading tower infrastructure before the 3G network is shut off, to ensure users receive the same or better coverage on the 4G network.

As with all technology changes, there is some risk to current provided service quality. Regional Tech Hub has released a number of resources and tips, including a Q&A document, to assist with the transition and guide consumers through any challenges that arise.
